Berlin

Berlin is the capital and largest city of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is located in the northeast of the country, on the rivers Spree and Havel. Berlin is the political, economic, and cultural center of Germany.


Berlin has a rich and dramatic history. This is one of the youngest cities in Europe, founded in the twelfth century. Quickly evolved to become a member of the Hanseatic League, which consisted market towns of northern Germany. The unification of Berlin and Cologne, who was on the other side of the river Spree, came in 1709. At this time the city hadabout 60 000 inhabitants. When in 1701 Frederick III was crowned as the King of Prussia, Berlin became the capital of the largest German state. Capital of a united Germany became in 1871. It was the capital during the Weimar Republic, and during the Third Reich. A large part of the city was destroyed during World War II, after the numerous bombing. After the war, Berlin was divided into four sectors, which are managed by the United States, United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. He was under the administration of the German Democratic Republic, and was a symbol of the Cold War. Divided by the "Berlin Wall" in 1961. Berlin was re-united after the destruction of the wall in 1989, and Germany reunified the following year. Since 1991, Berlin was instead the city of Bonn, declared as the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. Today Berlin is a very popular destination on the tourist map of Germany, with many tourists from around the world.

Berlin Cathedral is one of the symbols of Berlin and headquarters of the Protestant Church in Germany. It was built on the foundations of a chapel dedicated to St. Erasmus, which was incorporated into the Berlin castle. And in 1465, it was the Catholic church, but converted to Protestant during the first half of the sixteenth century. Mid-eighteenth century, the church was completely destroyed. The new church was built in Baroque style in 1750, but she soon disappeared. The cornerstone of the new cathedral was laid in 1894, and its construction was completed in 1905. The dome is 114 meters high, and the value of the cathedral is about 180 million euros. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin.

Barndenburg gate is a symbol of old Berlin. It was built by order of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, from 1788  to 1791. The gate was part of the city walls, and from it led avenue to the royal palace. It consists of twelve Doric columns, six on each side, which opened five passages with various reliefs. At the top of the gate is the Quadriga, a sculpture of four-horse carriages operated by the goddess of victory, Victoria.

The Reichstag was built in 1894 as the home of the parliament of the German Empire. Its architect was Paul Wallot, a building style is Renaissance, with elements of Baroque and Classicism. Above the entrance is the famous inscription " To the German people", which has long been controversial details of this building.
